Seniors cross the finish line and take a victory lap at Darlington Raceway for graduation

Seniors at the South Carolina Governor's School of Science and Mathematics held a drive-in graduation at the Darlington Raceway.
Students decorated their cars with streamers, balloons, and banners as they enjoyed seeing their classmates for the first time in months.
The ceremony was held in the parking lot. Students were instructed to remain in their cars until it was time to receive their diploma. Once all the seniors turned their tassels from left to right, it was time to start their engines.
Cars filed into the raceway behind the Darlington pace car. One by one, each student lined up on the finish line and waited patiently for the school interim principal to wave the checkered flag. As soon as she waved the flag, all you could hear was burning rubber. Students drove as fast as they could around the track excited to enter the next chapter of their lives.
Ershela Sims, the school's interim principal, saw the importance of having an in-person graduation and was happy that this event came together so quickly.
"We heard that loud and clear from both the parents and the students wanting a memorable way to celebrate their graduation while also maintaining safety of those involved," Sims said.
